In 2001 there were approximately1.8 million Australians (9.6% of the population) reported having long-term mental or behavioural problems. I believe that my role as an artist is to promote a societal shift to a more positive way of thinking and living. My current work employs cognitive behavioural therapy as a form of combating mental illness.

If our brains are only able to have one conscious thought at a time, using a series of positive affirmations negates room for ego based negative thoughts. My canvasses provide positive statements that address the viewer as ‘I’ such as ‘I choose to live in the now and not hold the past against myself’ or ‘I am a beautiful soul’. There is no room in those moments of connecting with the canvas, for negative thought. Hopefully the viewer would leave the space having had some sort of psychological shift, conscious or not.

Biography
Tori Swedosh was born to English parents in Montreal Canada in 1968. After a stint in upstate New York, she spent her childhood years in Newfoundland Canada. Sick of shovelling snow the family immigrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1982. Tori graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1989 as a printmaker. Not having access to a printing press, she started painting on paper with acrylic and oil pastels. She has travelled extensively through Europe and parts of the Middle East. Once again in Melbourne, with her husband, 2 children, and a cat after 8 years living in the UK she is happy to be ‘home’. Now experimenting with newer ideas in creating images, she has started exhibiting regularly with a view to creating a movement in ‘positivism’, changing viewers perceptions to a more affirming way of thinking and living.
